The girls high school basketball Power Poll will run Friday’s through the end of the regular season. Records are through Thursday Jan. 25 games.

Rank, team, record, classification, previous

1. Nease (19-3, Class 7A), 1

Quality wins: Bartram Trail (twice), Homestead, Wisc., Melbourne, Menendez, Middleburg (twice), Ponte Vedra, Rockledge, St. Augustine, Spruce Creek, West, Calif.,

Notable: The Panthers enjoyed their first week as the area’s top-ranked team with a pair of comfortable wins. Nease routed a very good Menendez team 43-9, and then beat a quality Bartram team 42-30 in the St. Johns River Athletic Conference tournament. It faces area No. 2 Fleming Island on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) for the conference crown. It will be a chance to atone for one of its three losses this season. Fleming beat Nease 64-62 in the second game of the year.

2. Fleming Island (21-3, Class 8A), 3

Quality wins: Bartram Trail, First Coast, Middleburg (twice), Nease, Oakleaf, Orange Park, Ribault.

Notable: The Golden Eagles put together a solid run since we last checked in, beating previously ranked Middleburg twice (62-54 and 61-50), as well as quality Orange Park squad (64-36). They enter the conference showdown with Nease on a nine-game winning streak.

3. Fernandina Beach (20-4, Class 5A), 4

Quality wins: Bolles, Flagler Palm Coast, Middleburg, Newberry, Raines, Ribault, Sandalwood

Notable: Fernandina Beach has won nine consecutive games, none bigger than a 60-50 victory over previous No. 2 Sandalwood on Jan. 23. What a fantastic effort by Alexis Schulz in that game, who went for a varsity career-high 34 points against Sandalwood.

4. Sandalwood (16-2, Class 9A), 2

Quality wins: Nease, Flagler Palm Coast, Raines (twice), Ribault (three times), Tampa Catholic.

Notable: I think Sandalwood is probably better than a No. 4 in the area, but the Saints are 4-2 over their last six games. They beat Raines 70-59 for the Gateway Conference title on Jan. 20 and then fell to Fernandina Beach. They rebounded for a 65-15 rout of Paxon.

5. Oakleaf (17-4, Class 8A), NR

Quality wins: Atlantic Coast, Bartram Trail (twice), Camden County, Fernandina Beach, Lee, Orange Park, Paxon

Notable: It’s been musical chairs in the No. 5 position all season, and the Knights move back in. They’ve won three straight since a 21-point loss to Fleming Island in mid-January. Two of those wins have been solid, 40-33 over Bartram Trail, and 49-45 over a 15-win Camden program.

Dropped out: Middleburg (15-7, Class 7A), went 1-7 since last poll.

Next three: Ponte Vedra (17-3, Class 6A); Potter’s House (13-8, Independent); Middleburg (15-7, Class 7A).

On the bubble: Bartram Trail (12-8, Class 8A); Bishop Kenny (13-8, Class 6A); Bolles (13-6, Class 5A); First Coast (14-6, Class 8A); Menendez (13-5, Class 6A); Orange Park (14-7, Class 6A); Raines (14-5, Class 5A); Ribault (11-13, Class 6A); St. Augustine (11-8, Class 7A); University Christian (10-5, Class 4A).
