Rank, team, record, classification, previous

1. Sandalwood (12-1, Class 9A), 1

Quality wins: Nease, Flagler Palm Coast, Raines, Ribault (twice), Tampa Catholic.

Notable: The Saints took their first loss of the season on Thursday night with a 61-51 setback to 10-4 Spruce Creek. That’s an important loss, too, with Sandalwood and Spruce Creek District 1-9A opponents.

2. Nease (15-3, Class 7A), 2

Quality wins: Bartram, Homestead, Wisc., Middleburg, Ponte Vedra, Rockledge, St. Augustine, West, Calif.,

Notable: The Panthers gave unbeaten Winter Haven everything it could handle last week in a 60-56 OT loss. That alone says everything you need to know about Nease — the Panthers are very, very good. I’d like to see Nease and No. 1 Sandalwood face off late in the season.

3. Fleming Island (15-3, Class 8A), 3

Quality wins: Bartram Trail, First Coast, Nease, Oakleaf, Ribault.

Notable: A 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles, a 60-40 win over a very good Orange Park team, followed by a 41-point lashing of Bradford. Only one loss by Fleming has come to an area team, 56-54 to Bartram Trail. The Golden Eagles’ other two defeats, 65-58 to 16-2 Lake Howell, and 59-52 14-2 Bishop Moore.

4. Oakleaf (14-3, Class 8A), 4

Quality wins: Bartram Trail, Fernandina Beach, Lee, Orange Park, Paxon

Notable: A 3-1 span for Oakleaf, which lost to Middleburg (69-62), and then romped over Buchholz, Creekside and Orange Park. The Knights have two losses by a combined eight points to area teams (Fleming Island, Middleburg).

5. Fernandina Beach (15-4, Class 5A), NR

Quality wins: Bolles, Flagler Palm Coast, Middleburg, Raines, Ribault

Notable: The Pirates have lost just once to an area school, Oakleaf in the season-opener. They’ve won four in a row, including a 49-36 victor over previous No. 5 Middleburg on Jan. 9.

Dropped out: Middleburg (13-4, Class 7A), lost to Fernandina Beach.

Next three: Middleburg (13-4, Class 7A); Potter’s House (11-7, Independent); Ponte Vedra (11-3, Class 6A).

On the bubble: Bartram Trail (10-6, Class 8A); Bishop Kenny (11-5, Class 6A); Bolles (9-5, Class 5A); First Coast (11-5, Class 8A); Lee (7-5, Class 8A); Menendez (11-3, Class 6A); Orange Park (11-5, Class 6A); Raines (11-3, Class 5A); Ribault (10-9, Class 6A); St. Augustine (11-5, Class 7A); University Christian (5-4, Class 4A).
