Jaguars owner Shad Khan is 'very optimistic' about future of Jacksonville

Posted: May 9, 2014 - 9:09pm  |  Updated: May 9, 2014 - 9:27pm

Jaguars owner Shad Khan said Friday he thinks positive changes are coming for the city of Jacksonville.

“I think Jacksonville is going to change and is going to change for the better,” Khan said. “I’m very optimistic.”

Khan, who was in town for the NFL draft, said he got an interesting response from his recent “mojo” comment to the World Affairs Council.

He said during a question-and-answer session at the event when asked about Jacksonville not pushing its potential, “I think there has been a vacuum here. I can’t explain it. A homeless guy in Detroit has more mojo than a millionaire in Jacksonville.”

Of the reaction to it, Khan said, “I think, overall, it’s very positive. It’s like the Aqua Velva commercial. You get slapped in the face. Thanks, I needed that.”

Explaining the comment, he said, “What the comment meant in a good way is there is a very relaxed vibe here. OK. A lot of times, you need a certain swagger or a push to get things done. So one of the characteristics you see outside, beautiful sun, beaches, great lifestyle, your blood pressure goes down when you step off the plane here. Those are all great things.”

But there’s not the push, although he added young people can make a difference in Jacksonville.

“I think besides the natural attributes we talked about, Jacksonville has something very, very enviable, desirable. Young people,” he said. “Those are the ones who drive things. Compared to Miami, Naples and, frankly, even Orlando, is the amount of young professionals. Young people are moving in. The cost of living is low. The life is great so they’re the ones who can drive change, the desire to get better, entrepreneurial drive, creation of new companies. That’s a good combination.”

He said a better Jacksonville is good for the Jaguars.

“I’m looking at it from the viewpoint of the area, but it’s also very important for me that Jacksonville is vibrant and growing. The football team needs that for a civic reason. But also, first of all, whether you like it or not, the owner of the team is a very, very powerful position to be able to articulate [his views]. They welcome your opinions,” he said.

Khan said the Jaguars aren’t his only investment in Jacksonville.

“I’ve invested in a bunch of companies locally. A number of them are doing well, and [I’m] working with the community,” he said.

Khan will hold a state of the franchise news conference on Tuesday, along with team president Mark Lamping, general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley.

If I got EVERYTHING I ask the

If I got EVERYTHING I ask the Town Clowns for...& received it.
I'd be optimistic too.

Jacksonville is absolutely the Sucker City of the South, if not the nation.

As far as the youth being jax's savior, that is really scary itself!!!!!

Yeah, SCARY that a bunch of

Yeah, SCARY that a bunch of young professionals who grew up in the Jacksonville the older generation gave us actually demanding & providing a change is SCARY. The generations before US LET this town become what it is today. Don't give credit where credit us due to the Riverside Arts Market, or the local beer breweries, or One Spark, because, the "youth" had NO hand in that. Yeah, SCARY STUFF.

What a bunch of Bozos above

What a bunch of Bozos above me. This city is a sleeping giant with problems it should solve on its own immediately, but it takes someone like Shad Kahn to come in here and shake things up to wake it up. That is a great thing. Don't scoff at it. Accept it . It's a rare gift that doesn't come around often.

I agree with Shad and the

I agree with Shad and the caveman. Jacksonville has potential, Jacksonville has the weather, Jacksonville has the beaches and the river, Jacksonville has an NFL and an AFL team, Jacksonville has the TPC now we just need a Mayor and City Council that actually can work together for the good of Jacksonville.

You posters kill me (except

You posters kill me (except for Dave) because the Jags owner is talking about how great our city and future is ---not about moving the team-- and you all mock him for it !! The Jaguars are one of this city's best assets and finally we have an owner who is doing what we all prayed for years for ---bring in a top GM, top HC, and top players and start winning. That the owner would fix up the stadium and bring pride back to the Jags.
Well Mr Khan has done that and I for one am very happy about it. Instead of like a few years ago during the horrible Malarkey year where I almost got rid of my season tickets and gave up on the Jags, now I'm excited for the future and can't wait until the season starts.

I have met so many people

I have met so many people over the years that have told me that Jacksonville is one of the worst cities they have ever been to, that they don't like it because it has nothing to offer. I still think of the bad things sports writer Woody Paige said about Jacksonville years ago and probably still feels about Jacksonville. I don't think it is that bad of a place, but so many others do.

Trying to recover from his

Trying to recover from his pretentious "no mojo" comment. For a man with humble roots, that was an unfortunate statement - I think.

Now as far as my SCARY

Now as far as my SCARY comment goes, here are the facts:
In our neighborhood (nice average to above average) half the kids (young adults 25-30 years old) are back home living with dear ole Mom & Dad. Many have lost their jobs, had homes foreclosed on, divorced & totally clueless about how to make a living. Not to mention paying Taxes to build the fluff & puff projects they feel they need. Oh by the way, give some of these "kids" another 30 years & they STILL will be CLUELESS!

Now that is what I define as Scary!!!!!
Of course, I suspect some of the posters here are still at home with Mommy as well.

So Jacksonville what's your

So Jacksonville what's your favorite football team now?

For those of us who need it the number to cancel season tickets is 633-2000.

We can try brown paper bags again, but I think it's time to make a statement!

As usual Noillusions is

As usual Noillusions is publishing his normal lie. "Jimmy Px
Khan DID NOT "fix up the stadium" the Taxpayer (you & I) are underwriting the 64 MILLION $ tab for the scoreboard!!!!
PLUS we get to pay it off for the NEXT 35-40 YEARS!!!!"

Unless you are living in a hotel or motel in Duval county you are not paying one dime nor am I for the scoreboard.

"The city council on Tuesday voted 14-2 to approve $43 million of $63 million in stadium upgrades to EverBank Field. Khan has already pledged the remaining $20 million help to finance two new video scoreboards and an interactive area that will include a pool."

"While the fund is literally paid with tax dollars, it's not putting a burden on local Jacksonville tax payers, but on people who travel to Jacksonville for various events including but not limited to events that would utilize the scoreboards. In the view of the city council, and the rules of the bed tax bill, it is being used to improve the city of Jacksonville.

The bill explicitly states that the bed tax funds can only be used to maintain these entities, which in turn, helps improve the city of Jacksonville. The funds cannot be used to improve roads. The funds cannot be used to pay police or fire fighter pensions. The funds cannot be used for "Meals on Wheels". The funds cannot be used for anything other than maintaining and upgrading facilities in the "sports complex".

You remind me of Joseph Goebbels who said, "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it."

You hate this town and you constantly post misleading statements, and outright lies about it.

As I said before just move. If you cannot sell your house now in this growing market you must have a dump. Houses in my subdivision are selling at 10% to 20% higher than a year ago.

"May 8, 2014: Metrostudy today released its 1Q14 survey of housing activity in the Jacksonville market – which includes Clay, Duval, Nassau and St Johns counties. Starts and closings in the Jacksonville region were up significantly in the first quarter from last quarter and from a year ago. In the Jacksonville market 1,552 single-family units were started in the first quarter of 2014, an increase of 27.7% from 1Q13. The annual starts rate compared to last year increased by 32.6% to 5,577 annual starts.

Single-family quarterly closings totaled 1,510 units, 51.2% higher than the 999 closings in the same quarter last year. The annual closings rate (past 4 quarters) totaled 5,179 units, which is 41.3% above the rate of 3,666 units per year recorded a year ago."

It is obvious you either don't know anything about Jacksonville or you are just a nay sayer that would never be happy here no matter what.

There is not a single city in this country that doesn't have problems with its elected leaders to some degree or another. I was born and raised here and have lived in four other cities in this country and three in other countries. Sure some have more to offer, but day in and day out we have it good.

>>KHAN HAS NOT PAID ONE CENT TOWARD THE SCOREBOARD YET (OTHER THAN LOBBYIST ACTIVITY) GET OVER IT.

Unless you are living in a hotel or motel in Duval county you are not paying one dime nor am I for the scoreboard.
INCORRECT. JAX UNDERWROTE & APPROVED THE 63 MILLION $ BOND. TRUST ME BY THE TIME IT'S FINISHED 64 + MILLION $'S WILL BE INVOLVED. WITH THE HEAVY DEBT LOAD THIS TOWN HAS, OUR BOND INTEREST RATE IS NOW EXCESSIVE!!! PLAIN & SIMPLE THE TAXPAYER IS SCREWED AGAIN! EVEN THE TOWN CLOWNS SAID IT WILL TAKE 35-40 YEARS TO PAY OFF.

"The city council on Tuesday voted 14-2 to approve $43 million of $63 million in stadium upgrades to EverBank Field. Khan has already pledged the remaining $20 million help to finance two new video scoreboards and an interactive area that will include a pool."

AGAIN, FORECASTED NUMBERS MAKE UP THE PAYMENT SCHEDULE!!!
I SUPPOSE YOU RECALL & LIKELY GULLIBLE ENOUGH TO BELIEVE WHEN THE TOWN SAID 17,000 RIDERS A DAY WOULD TAKE THE SKYRIDE?
I'M NOT CERTAIN THE 17,000TH PERSON HAD RIDDEN IT YET. FOR CERTAIN THERE HAS NOT BEEN 17,000 PAYING CUSTOMERS!!

UNDERSTOOD & UNDER-IMPRESSED. CERTAINLY, THIS TOWN NEEDS NO ROAD IMPROVEMENTS, PAY THEIR PROMISED & CONTRACTED FIRE FIGHTER / POLICE PENSIONS, MEALS ON WHEELS...UNDERSTOOD, SAYS A LOT DOESN'T IT?

DELETED OPINION.

As I said before just move. If you cannot sell your house now in this growing market you must have a dump. Houses in my subdivision are selling at 10% to 20% higher than a year ago.
JUST TODAY, EVEN WITH THE MOST OPTIMISTIC REALTOR IN JAX, SHE STATED ON A LOCAL RADIO STATION THAT JAX'S REAL ESTATE MARKET IS GROWING 3-7%. FAR BELOW THE CITIES ADVANCEMENT I NEED TO MOVE TO. OF COURSE, I'M SURE YOU & JUST ABOUT OTHER UNREALISTIC POSTER BELIEVE THEY LIVE IN THIS TOWN'S ULTIMATE FAIRYLAND NEIGHBORHOOD! AND OF COURSE A 20% INCREASE IS VERY REALISTIC. OBVIOUSLY, YOU DON'T SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OTHER SOUTHERN CITIES WHERE HOME REAL ESTATE MARKETS HAVE EXPLODED OR AT LEAST RECOUPED NICELY...MONTHS & MONTHS AGO!

"May 8, 2014: Metrostudy today released its 1Q14 survey of housing activity in the Jacksonville market – which includes Clay, Duval, Nassau and St Johns counties. GOOD FOR THIS STUDY & I'M IMPRESSED YOU FOUND SUCH NUMBERS. FACT IS JAX STILL REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST FORECLOSED HOME MARKETS IN THE US! PERSONALLY, I DON'T SEE ANY MAJOR COMPANIES COMING HERE TO CHANGE THE LANDSCAPE...NAME A COUPLE? THIS AIN'T HARD & I'M ONLY ASKING FOR A COUPLE MAJOR cORPORATE PLAYERS?
AND JUST HOW MANY EMPLOYEES WILL THEY BRING...W/O TAX INCENTIVES WITHIN 72 WEEKS? YES, A MINOR DETAIL, BUT JUST ANOTHER MAJOR UNFILLED EXPENSE THE TAXPAYER HAS TO COVER.

DELETED...SEE ABOVE.

It is obvious you either don't know anything about Jacksonville or you are just a nay sayer that would never be happy here no matter what.
UNTIL THE TOWN CLOWNS (AND SOME OF ITS CITIZENS BECOME REAL) I MUST ALIGN WITH THE LATTER. UNFORTUNATELY, MOST OF THE NATION, AND CERTAINLY CORPORATE LEADERSHIP FEEL THE SAME WAY. IF YOU BEG TO DIFFER, PLEASE LIST YOUR REASONING & PROOF WHY:

There is not a single city in this country that doesn't have problems with its elected leaders to some degree or another. I was born and raised here and have lived in four other cities in this country and three in other countries. Sure some have more to offer, but day in and day out we have it good.
I HAVE LIVED, TRAVELED, EXPERIENCED, RENTED / LEASED / RESIDED ALL ON 4 CONTINENTS. I'VE SEEN ALOT & EXPERIENCED ALOT. UNFORTUNATELY & SADLY FROM YOUR STANDPOINT, JAX IS DECADES (AGAIN DECADES) BEHIND OTHER CITIES! IF YOU'VE NOTICED, I GENERALLY REFER TO SIMILAR SOUTHERN CITES I HAVE LIVED IN OR FREQUENT. ALL BEING FAR, FAR MORE ALONG THAN JAX.

LOOK, BULLG2, IF YOU DON'T GET IT, I UNDERSTAND. FOR THOSE THAT DO...AND I HOPE YOU SEE THERE ARE MANY...IT IS DIFFICULT UNDERSTANDING WHY SO MANY OTHER SOUTHERN CITIES ARE BLOWING JAX AWAY!!!!!!

OH, I'M WILLING TO DEPART WITH MY DOUBLE WIDE...OF COURSE IT HAS APPRECIATED ABOUT (HUMMMM 60%) SINCE I PURCHASED IT SIMPLY BECAUSE I LIVE IN DUVAL. BY THE WAY, TAXES ONLY INCREASED SLIGHTLY WHILE OTHER PEOPLES REAL ESTATE VALUES SUCK!

Noillusions the big

Noillusions the big differences between you and me is I see the good, and you look for the bad. I am sitting here at one of the nicest mid-size airports in the country, but yet you have ragged on it several times.

First Khan has already spent $11 million on the stadium so he is already putting his own money into the facility. Next he has already made his first payment in the new scoreboard. NO you and I will never pay for these improvements. It would take a rewriting of the charter.

NO I never did like the idea of the skyway. Especially in view of our downtown situation. Next it never covered the more important areas of the city.

As far as the forclouser rate I see the cup as half full where you see it empty. The same report I used in my previous post showed that the forclouser rate in Jacksonville was 29% better than it was this time last year.

We generally do not know when a company is looking at us or any city until well into the process. There may be some, there may not be. What we do know is that there are 1,100 people a day moving into Florida and Jacksonville is getting their share. That alone increase the home market and the tax base. And NO most are not retirees.

CNN and Money magazine voted Jacksonville one of the top 100 places to live in the country. In the top 100 Jacksonville had the third highest job growth rate.

As far as some of the other southern cities you have mentioned in the past, I would not live there, for numerous reason. One big one is cost of living and taxes.

You can continue to put Jacksonville down, but don't count in me to agree. Especially when you continue to lie about the stadium expenses.

I see the difference between

I see the difference between you & I as being...I'm REAL & some are overly optimistic.

Now, JIA are you kidding? Granted a good facility, but I'd MUCH RATHER HAVE DIRECT FLIGHTS!!!!!

Granted, Khan NEEDED to make improvements to the dressing room! IF he has made ANY payment to the scoreboard, I need proof.
You are totally WRONG! The jax Taxpayer will be FRONTING the Bond Money from this point on. Please identify what the "motel / hotel revenue stream is" you will quickly see it's not sole supportive!!!!! I hate to bust anyone's dreams but jax ain't a destination! 30 YEAR MINIUM PAYOFF...MORE LIKE 35-40!

Glad to see you were not one of the GULLIBLE SUCKERS concerning the skyway. (?).

As far as the foreclosure rate, I suppose I'm happy to see you'll pay 60% appreciation on my "double-wide" you know you being such a believer & all! NOT SURE ANYONE OUTSIDE YOU WOULD, BUT IT'S A NICE THOUGHT.

FIRST, IF JAX DOES NOT KNOW WHO IS PROSPECTING THIS TOWN, they are way, way, way, behind the 8 ball. I assume you are simply responding rather than knowing. I noticed you said "WE" I assume you are on the inside?

Understood...and of the ONE HUNDRED (100) "CNN" & "Money" reports. Just how MANY SOUTHERN CITIES RANKED ahead of jax? Think about it.

I believe "some if not all" the Southern Cities I've mentioned...have a comparable if not lower TAX STRUCTURE, MOST having SUBSTANTIALLY LOWER CRIME RATES, BETTER QUALITY OT LIFE, BETTER / MORE EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES, MORE JOB OPPORTUNITIES, MORE GROWTH POTENTIAL, MORE LOGICALLY (centrally) LOCATED TO BUSINESS CENTERS, BETTER AIR TRANSPORTATION, MUCH BETTER CULTURAL ACTIVITIES & SCENIC ENVIRONMENTS, NOT TO MENTION REAL ESTATE APPRECIATION AND SOME DEFINITELY OFFER A MORE COSMO LIFESTYLE THAN JAX. ETC.

BG2, face it jax is jax and the Taxpayer is screwed on so many "City Projects". Yes, calling jax a city is comforting to many.
City Projects include:

Skyride...ABSOLUTELY 0 (zero) revenue at a 6-7 MILLION $'s ANNUALLY cost to the Taxpayer just to keep operating.
Better jax program...the program is virtually dead, yet the supporting tax remains. And it did WHAT? Really?

Downtown development (over 1 BILLION Taxpayer $'s WASTED). Dare anyone to name a benefit.

The jags, anything wanted is anything provided at the Taxpayer expense.

Sports Events, ACC Championship, Super Bowl, Ship Basketball Game...All JOKES!!! Locally & Nationally!

Downtown "City Restaurant" investments, ending up costing the Taxpayer MILLIONS of $'s.

A Taj-Mahal courthouse that is a national joke!

A 25 year old sidewalk (riverwalk) that has returned nothing & is now under reconstruction at several MILLION $'s OVER RUN!!!!

A 35 Year old Landing that has really returned very little to the coffers of jax...and now asking for a total revamp!

A transportation "system" that has finally completed (?) 1 loop around this town...most comparable cities have loops, super loops and intertwined loops!

Comparable Souther Cities have modern, ultra-modern Convention Centers hosting 1000's & millions of tourists annually willing to party & spend big bucks at restaurants, bars, entertainment complexes, and luxury motels. Jax has a scoreboard.

BG2, I hope you understand. The common Taxpayer is tired of jax's town clowns robbing us everytime one of their "contributors" make a 1000 $ "investment" in their wallet.
IF YOU NEED MORE PROJECTS TO PONDER, PLEASE ADVISE.

Since I am using inflight

Since I am using inflight wifi and it is slow, I cannot get to all my info, but let me answer your complaint about JIA. Direct flights that I know of and have taken. Washington DC, NY, Minn./ St Paul, Detroit, Houston, Dallas, San Juan, Nassau, and there may be more. That is a very good group of destinations.

Next I don't understand your comment about 60% appreciation. I live at the beach, and have gained back all my paper lose.

BG2: Until there is a REAL

BG2:
Until there is a REAL change in Citizenry & Leadership in this backward buted town, there will not be ANY change.

For 20 plus years, I've had hope...the wasted investment in the scoreboard by the town clowns proved once again just how CLUELESS the leadership here is!!!!!!

Note: What the town's burdening Police / Fireman Pension OBLIGATION represents, alone is enough to scare most MAJOR CORPORATIONS away!!
Not to mention the ever increasing Bond Rating this town has...with little if anything to show in the revenue coffers.

There is a reason jax lags behind many other Southern Cities!
Hint: it's called LACK OF COMMONSENSE, LEADERSHIP, TOTALLY UNEDUCATED, GULLIBLE, IGNORANT AND A TOTALLY CLUELESS CITIZENRY!
Did I mention lack of commonsense??????????
Someone please call Corrine.
Think about it.

BG2 I understand. Jax lags

BG2
I understand.
Jax lags behind many other Southern Cities!
Regardless if you are talking about quality of life, opportunity for education, culturally, real estate appreciation, lack of crime, tax value, ground transportation quality, corporate opportunities, CITY Leadership, National prestige & yes even airport connections...jax lags behind!

Have a good flight. And please digest many of the facts I've presented.
I fly out tomorrow with 4-5 (depends) connections before ultimate destination.
