It was the most astounding quote, and quite disturbing if you’re a Tennessee fan, from SEC Media Days. When Volunteers football coach Butch Jones had the timidity to say, “I don’t view it as a disappointment,” — regarding his team’s collapse last season from a 5-0 start to a 9-4 record – you have to wonder about his expectation level for UT’s program.
Seriously, can you imagine Steve Spurrier or Nick Saban even thinking that for a second, let alone publicly verbalizing such a disingenuous response about losing four of the last eight games? Both of them would be ready to jump out of their skin over such a lethargic finish, but Jones acted like he was afraid to show frustration or be remotely critical.
If this was Jones’ response after his first season, it might be understandable. But entering his fifth year, after beating Florida and Georgia in the same season for the first time since 2004, not winning the SEC East has to be considered a major letdown.
That’s why Jones should have at least thrown out an adjective like “unacceptable” when discussing last season, if only to let UT fans know how much it grated on him and that it might serve as motivation in 2017.
Instead, Jones took a stunningly tame option, which might explain why the Volunteers have mostly been underachievers on his watch… .
When you cut through all the contrived bravado, race baiting and pre-fight theatrics for the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor matchup, it’s hard to envision this event remotely living up to the scripted hype. Just as McGregor would be favored if the two squared off in the Octagon, the same thing applies for Mayweather with them fighting in a boxing ring. The only suspense is how many pay-per-view suckers, er, customers, will buy into the circus… .
The National Arena League has multiple issues to improve on next season, but one thing that shouldn’t be a problem is having a football commissioner who can handle a championship trophy presentation without reading off a script. The champion Jacksonville Sharks and owner Jeff Bouchy deserved better from John Gregory in the post-game ceremony after Monday’s 27-21 win over the Columbus Lions than him reading two sentences off a piece of paper… .
South Carolina coach Will Muschamp’s response when Orlando Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi asked a question at SEC Media Days: “No need to ID yourself. They could use your voice to torture prisoners of war.” Fans are still waiting for Muschamp’s offenses to attack that well… .
If Peyton Manning performed in the NFL postseason like he did doing stand-up while hosting the ESPYs, he’d own a lot more Super Bowl rings… .
I’m going on my last summer vacation next week, but will return for training camp to watch the Jaguars begin their Super Bowl run.
