It might have been only three plays, but Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles noticed the difference playing against the first-team defense Monday.
“It was a little faster – that’s why the ones are the ones,” he said today. “But it was a good opportunity to get out there, get that exposure, see it and play against them. We’re calling the same plays and running the same stuff, but it’s just against guys that are a little bit faster so you have to adjust to that.”
Bortles made his first-team debut during Monday’s practice (the aforementioned three snaps of 11-on-11 plus working against the starting secondary in 7-on-7). The Jaguars practice later today.
Bortles is expected to play with the starters against Detroit on Friday.
“It will be another opportunity to go out there and try and show what I’ve been trying to work on and improve,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to capture and take a step forward.”
Bortles said his biggest improvement from Tampa Bay to Chicago was his footwork.
“I thought it was a little cleaner,” he said. “That’s been a big emphasis for a while now so I thought that was a little better but there’s still a long way to go.”
