A coalition of government and community health groups will host a series of information sessions across Duval County to help consumers who are shopping for a health care plan.
The first session will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Legends Community Center, 5130 Soutel Drive in Jacksonville.
The coalition will be host other events up until the health insurance Marketplace's March 31 enrollment deadline, according to a news release.
Trained representatives will be on hand to help consumers find and enroll in the optimal health insurance plan. All plans include key benefits such aspreventative care, hospital visits and prescriptions.
The city of Jacksonville is leading the coalition along with Get Covered America, state Rep. Mia Jones, the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida, the Sulzbacher Center, the Epilepsy Foundation and Agape Health Center Network, according to the release.
"The health of our city depends on the health of our people," said Mayor Alvin Brown. "It's important that Jacksonville residents have access to the information and assistance that will help them choose the quality, affordable health insurance that best fits their needs and budgets."
Before the Oct. 1 launch of the health insurance Marketplace, there were about 157,000 uninsured residents in Duval County that could now benefit from new options. Florida has led the nation in enrollees among all states with a federally run marketplace with a nearly nine-fold increase in consumers who have selected a plan, according to the release.
"We're proud to be working with the city of Jacksonville and Mayor Brown to make sure its residents get the opportunity to enroll in quality, affordable health coverage," said Get Covered America State Director Nicholas Duran. "We know that while there were issues back in October, things have improved a great deal and people are enrolling. It's on us to make sure they know about the financial help and experts that can help them cover their family."
Get Covered America is a national campaign of Enroll America that is focused on educating consumers about the benefits of health coverage and the new health insurance options available under the Affordable Care Act. For more information, go to getcoveredamerica.org.
