A Texas man buried Sunday when a Crescent Beach sand dune collapsed on him has died, according to a Facebook post from his sister.
A 35-year-old Texas man who was pulled from a collapsed sand tunnel Sunday afternoon near Crescent Beach has died, according to a family post on Facebook.
Lee Thomas Goggin, 35, was declared dead Tuesday afternoon, according to his sister, Rachel Goggin Burt. She posted on Facebook that her “precious, big brother is with Jesus.”
Deputies and paramedics were called responded to the a dune just north of the Spyglass Condominiums in Crescent Beach at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday, according to St. Johns County Fire Rescue. When they arrived, they found a man buried under two to three feet of sand in a hole that had been dug out parallel to the dunes, then apparently collapsed, according to the St. Augustine Record. Rescue personnel had to remove the sand to get to Lee Goggin, who had gone into cardiac arrest while trapped, officials said. Transported to Flagler Hospital, he was listed in critical condition, a GoFundMe site started by his sister Sunday saying her brother was alive but “is not breathing on his own.”
Lee Goggin and his family were en route to a vacation at Walt Disney World when the accident occurred, the Record said.
The cause of the sand tunnel collapse was being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office.
