A 20-year-old Orange Park man was seriously injured after a Wednesday night police chase started after a deputy was hurt and ended with a crash on Old Jennings Road, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Scott was booked on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury and reckless driving after being hospitalized in the 10:35 p.m. crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Passenger Alexis Parker, 19, of Orange Park, also was hospitalized.

The Sheriff’s Office said two deputies were working a special detail in Orange Park after residents reported crime and suspicious activity when they spotted a man and woman parked at a building that was closed for the night. After turning on their emergency lights, the deputies walked up to the Honda Odyssey and began talking with the couple, identified as Scott and Parker, the Sheriff’s Office said.

During the conversation, Scott put the minivan in reverse and hit one deputy, leaving him with a lacerated hand, the Sheriff’s Office said. Then the couple drove off at high speed with deputies in pursuit. Scott and Parker were headed west on Old Jennings but veered off the pavement near Knight Boxx Road and hit a tree before overturning, the Highway Patrol said.

Scott fled on foot but was soon captured. The injured deputy, who was not named, was treated for the lacerations and a possible fracture, the Sheriff’s Office said.
