A student died Tuesday afternoon following a “medical emergency” at Murray Middle School in St. Augustine, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen, whose name and age were not given, was participating in after-school girl’s basketball tryouts at the 150 Holmes Blvd. school when she collapsed, the Sheriff’s Office said. The tryouts, begun after classes Monday and Tuesday, have been cancelled for Wednesday, according to the school district.

Saying that many students, teachers, school staff and parents will be “reeling from this news,” Principal Tom Schwarm informed school parents of the death in an email statement.

“It is with extreme sadness and a heavy heart that I relay the news that one of our very own students has passed away this evening. It is out of respect for the family that I do not relay her name at this time,” he wrote. “… We will have our crisis team which includes grief counselors, district staff, school counselors and social workers on site tomorrow [Wednesday], and for as long as needed, to support the entire school community.”

Deputies and St. Johns Fire Rescue responded to the scene just west of downtown St. Augustine shortly after 3 p.m. after the young woman went into “medical distress.” Taken to Flagler Hospital, she was pronounced dead.

The cause of death will be determined by the District Medical Examiner’s Office.
