The Jacksonville house where a man was found shot to death late Nov. 24 was severely damaged in a Sunday fire that is now being investigated as arson, according to the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

The victim, so far unidentified by police, was found on the yard just before 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of Ida Street off Lem Turner Road, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Fire investigators believe the fire was intentionally set with damage estimated at $25,000, according to state spokesman Jon Moore. Moore said it is too soon to tell if the damage will result in the house being declared a total loss or if it had anything to do with the shooting.

“There has not been a direct connection identified at this time,” he said. “However, a connection between the Dec. 3 incident to the Thanksgiving homicide has not yet been ruled out by investigators.”

Police described the victim as a 25- to 35-year-old man but released no more information.

As for the cause of the fire, a final determination remains under investigation after samples were taken at the scene, Moore said.
