Motorists traveling on Jacksonville’s Westside face overnight detours this week as work continues on the First Coast Expressway Extension Project.

The detours are necessary to allow for miscellaneous bridge work to be done on the project’s northernmost segment connecting Florida 23 to Interstate 10 and U.S. 90/Beaver Street, according to Mary Justino, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Transportation project.

The work began Saturday night. It continues from 9 p.m.to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday. It will prevent motorists from exiting Florida 23 northbound onto I-10 westbound.

The detour of northbound Florida 23 using the Chaffee Road Interchange is for closures impacting the I-10 eastbound and westbound on ramps, Justino said.

On Thurday, U.S. 90/Beaver Street will be closed also from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the area near the project. Drivers on U.S. 90/Beaver Street traveling from the west will be detoured onto Otis Road, then Old Plank Road, then to Halsema Road to reconnect to U.S. 90, she said.

The detour for drivers from the east will be Halsema Road to Old Plank Road to Otis Road. Justino said this detour will allow for continuous east-west travel in the area.

Construction began on the $45 million extension of the First Coast Expressway in July 2015. The project is intended to reduce traffic congestion in the existing interchanges of I-10 at Chaffee Road and at U.S. 301.

The state Department of Transportation hired J.B. Coxwell Contracting Inc., of Jacksonville, to do the work. The project is part of the overall First Coast Expressway — a toll road being built to connect I-10 with I-95 in St. Johns County. The expressway section from U.S. 90/I-10 to New World Avenue in Duval County will not be tolled.

Transportation department officials are reminding motorists to obey the speed limit, be aware of heavy equipment in the work areas and to stay within the boundaries of the orange safety cones and barrels.
