Scott picks panelists


Gov. Rick Scott has made 27 appointments to judicial nominating commissions in Florida with several going to First Coast lawyers.

Judicial nominating commissions recommend candidates for judgeships to the governor. Timothy Volpe and Michael Freed of Jacksonville were appointed to the 1st District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission.

Michael Abel, Chip Bachara and Dexter Davis, all of Jacksonville, were all appointed to the 4th Circuit commission — with Bachara and Davis being reappointed.

Tance Roberts of St. Augustine and Raven Sword of Palm Coast were reappointed to the 7th Circuit commission.

For obesity awareness

Jacksonville Jaguar Cecil Shorts III has teamed up with the United Way of Northeast Florida to increase awareness about childhood obesity.

Wide receiver Shorts recently joined a group of children for a photo shoot as part of a nationwide NFL and United Way campaign to improve the health and wellness of young people.

Billboards featuring Shorts will appear in the Jacksonville market in the fall.

Campaign for schools

The Bridge of Northeast Florida has launched a school supply campaign to help the more than 3,000 students it serves prepare to return to class Aug. 18.

The nonprofit, which provides educational programs for at-risk youths, is asking companies, churches or civic groups to hold school supply drives for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Also, The Bridge will accept monetary donations and gift cards, which will be used to purchase school supplies. The goal is to have all donated supplies by Aug. 22.

A day for community

Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church has invited all of Northeast Florida to its 15th annual Family, Friends and Community Day Event on Saturday.

The 95-year-old church on Jacksonville’s Northside will offer free “food, fun and fellowship,” including outdoor activities, live entertainment, vendors, giveaways, cash prizes and tours of Abyssinia’s “New Generation of Excellence” Youth Center, according to a news release.
