Nassau County’s Board of Commissioners is working on an amendment to the county’s Land Development Code to allow dining with dogs — outdoors only, on a restaurant patio. The code amendment empowers restaurants to legally allow dogs in their patio area, based on state rules that mandate local municipalities must amend their codes to allow this. The commission asked staff on May 21 to draw up an ordinance. At a June 17 public hearing, the county’s Planning and Zoning Board recommended approval of the ordinance to the commissioners. The second public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday in the commission chambers at 96135 Nassau Place in Yulee.

No restaurant is mandated to allow this if passed. This gives them the option, and no fees are associated with it.

Some have concerns about allowing dogs in restaurants.
