BRUNSWICK, GA. | If all goes as planned, a nine-story power plant will crumble Saturday morning when a crew begins a systematic implosion for owner Georgia Power Co.

Plant McManus, a nine-story, oil-fired power plant, hasn’t been in use for a couple of years, partly because of stricter federal air admission standards and partly because other fuels became more cost effective.

The demolition of the plant and its 180-foot smokestack are set to begin at 9 a.m. Glynn County announced the operation this week to warn the public and help prevent people from being alarmed by the noise.

Glynn County police will help enforce a safety zone outside Georgia Power’s fence line and the U.S. Coast Guard will also prevent boats from getting to close. The power plant is on a creek where it once received shipments of fuel by barge.
