Posted: January 13, 2014 - 10:21am

BRUNSWICK | The Georgia state patrol is investigating a Friday accident that killed a Hartwell, Ga., woman when the car in which she was a passenger left Interstate 95 and hit a parked car.

Joseph Piroska, 72, of Lavonia, Ga., was driving a 2012 Mercedes south about 2:15 p.m. when it veered off the highway and struck a broken down 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck that was beside the road, the Georgia State Patrol said.

A passenger Kathleen Harris, 62, of Hartwell was killed when the Mercedes hit the rear of the truck just south of the Altamaha River bridge, the state patrol said.

McIntosh County emergency medical workers transported Piroska and two passengers, Conelia Piroska, , also of Lavonia, and Michael Harris, 63, of Lavonia to Southeast Georgia Health System for injuries not thought to be life-threatening, the state patrol said.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Joseph Piroska fell asleep while driving, but a state patrol Special Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.
