Police have released the identity of a man found dead beneath a four-wheeler in a Jacksonville apartment complex retention pond Thursday.

Gale Eugene Johnson, 61, of Osceola Trail in Middleburg was discovered in the pond at The Preserve at Paradise Island complex at 8787 Southside Blvd. about 6:50 p.m. Police said Johnson was found in the pond and had been using the four-wheeler as part of his maintenance job. It appeared the four-wheeler toppled into the water.

No final cause of death has been reported by police, but they are preliminarily investigating it as an accidental drowning.
