The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a 22-year-old man Wednesday on a murder charge in the death of a toddler on Halloween.

Edgardo Luis Reyes-Delgado is accused of shaking and killing his girlfriend’s daughter, 2-year-old Noelani Marmolejo, Assistant Chief Chris Butler said.

Reyes-Delgado, arrested Tuesday, had lived with his girlfriend at an Atlantic Boulevard apartment complex for about three months and was watching the child on Halloween while she worked.

Butler said Reyes-Delgado went to his girlfriend’s work because she had fever medication for the child who was suffering from some type of infection. After picking up the medicine, he called the mother about five minutes later saying Noelani was unresponsive.

Reyes-Delgado denies shaking the toddler, but police determined he was the only one watching her when the injuries occurred, Butler said.
