A 30-year-old Department of Corrections officer was arrested Thursday after a 16-year-old girl said she was impregnated by him in October, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.

John Wesley Padgett of Tee Street in Macclenny is charged with lewd and lascivious behavior. He remains in the Baker County jail on $250,000 bail, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Joey Dobson said Padgett worked at Baker Correctional in Sanderson. He said the victim originally said she had been sexually assaulted outside her school in Glen St. Mary, but the investigation determined otherwise.

“We couldn’t develop any leads, then the mother began working with the investigators,” Dobson said.

She agreed to call Padgett and have it recorded by investigators. Padgett said the incident began when he and the girl, then 15, were playing around on the bed and it was a “major mistake,” according to the arrest report.

A DNA test will be done to confirm who the father is, according to the arrest report.

Was the "major mistake"

Was the "major mistake" playing around with a 15-year old or not using a condom?
