Motorcyclist Peter Hapsis was killed Wednesday afternoon when his Honda motorcycle hit 71-year-old Nur Emin Emir's white Chevrolet S-10 pickup on Beach Boulevard at Barkley Road.

The two men killed in a Wednesday afternoon accident at Beach Boulevard and Barkley Road have been identified as 26-year-old motorcyclist Peter Hapsis of Marsh Drive and 71-year-old pickup driver Nur Emin Emir of Nimitz Court, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Hapsis was riding his Honda motorcycle west on Beach at 3:10 p.m. when he approached the Barkley traffic signal as it turned yellow, the Sheriff’s Office said. He continued through the intersection as the light turned red.

Emir accelerated his Chevrolet S-10 pickup into the Honda’s path before his light turned green, the Sheriff’s Office said. Hapsis, wearing a helmet, hit the S-10’s driver’s door and was thrown off. He was dead at the scene. Emir was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police are still investigating.
