Orange Park Medical Center is planning a freestanding emergency room on Normandy Boulevard. Last week, the hospital paid $1,350,000 for the one-story, 8.738-square-foot office building at 5773 Normandy Blvd., just east of Lane Ave.
But it plans to tear that building down start building the new 10-bed, 10,800-square-foot emergency room this spring. It will employ about 50 people, operate 24 hours a day and is expected to open this fall. The total cost is estimated at $12 million.
The medical center opened its first freestanding emergency room in 2015 on 103rd Streeet just east of Interstate 295. It opened with 11 beds but eight beds and another 3,100 square feet were added last year. In 2017, it saw more than 50,000 patients, the hospital reported.
