Aldi will open its first grocery store in Orange Park on Thursday. It’s at 661 Blanding Blvd. in Bolton Plaza, the shopping center anchored by Academy Sports + Outdoors. Ribbon cutting is at 8:35 a.m. Customers can enter for a chance to win a year’s supply of Aldi produce.

Aldi, a discount grocer, is making efforts nationwide to upgrade its stores and its image. I visited the Town Center store, which opened in August, for the first time recently. It’s clearly a little nicer than the one on Southside that opened in 2015.

Meanwhile, Aldi will be holding hiring events at all its Florida stores on Thursday from 7 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It’s seeking to fill aobut 400 positions statewide. The salaries: Associate, $12 an hour; shift manager, $16.50 an hour; manager trainee, $24 an hour with opportunity to earn $80,000 to $90,000 as store manager.

The first of Gate Petroleum’s new car washes opens Wednesday. It’s on Collins Road, just west of Interstate 295 and in front of the Walmart. To celebrate, Gate is giving away free washes through Jan. 19.

After that, you have to pay.

It’s an express carwash, which is the fastest-growing type in the fast-growing car wash industry now. That means cars go through a 125-foot tunnel with the driver staying inside.

There is no interior cleaning available; customers can use free vacuums.

Gate first announced in 2016 that it planned to open a new line of standalone car washes, expecting to open 20 or more in the area. The next four to open:

  • 2545 Palm Valley Road in Nocatee
  • Beach and Hodges boulevards
  • Emerson Street and Philips Highway
  • Blanding Boulevard and Hyde Park Road
