The Persbacker-Wyman Family Foundation has established a $25,000 matching gift challenge in support of “Sound Connections,” a music therapy outreach program offered by the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach that benefits children with special needs in three elementary schools in Ponte Vedra.
If the challenge is met, there will be $50,000 to sustain this outreach program for the 2017-18 school year at Ocean Palms, Valley Ridge Academy and PVPV/Rawlings elementary schools. Until Dec. 1 every contribution of at least $50 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000.
LaVilla School of the Arts wins innovation award
The LaVilla School of the Arts won the Arts School Network 2017 Arts Innovation Award for serving its students and fostering meaningful community partnerships. The Arts School Network, the nation’s largest professional membership organization of specialized arts schools, awards the honor to schools that take innovative artistic risks in using the arts as a vehicle for teaching academics. The award will be presented at a conference in Minnesota in late October.
‘Mockingbird’ auditions Monday
Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday for adult roles in “To Kill a Mockingbird” at Theatre Jacksonville, 2032 San Marco Blvd. For information on available roles go to www.theatrejax.com/auditions. Children’s roles have already been cast. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Christopher Sergel’s dramatization of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, will be Theatre Jacksonville’s “Classic in San Marco,” performed Sept. 15 to Oct. 1.
Mixology at Lightner Museum
The Lightner Museum, 75 King St., St. Augustine, will hold the first in its “Summer Mixology Series” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The event, which replaces the “Lightner After Hours” program, will highlight the social trends of the Gilded Era, which saw the development of the cocktail. Landscape talk at Beaches Museum
Terry DelValle, Duval County’s Urban Horticulture Agent, and Eve Pankok, Duval County’s Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program Assistant, will discuss Florida-friendly landscape in a Boardwalk talk at 6 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at the Beaches Museum & History Park, 381 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach. At the conclusion of their talk, guests will be invited to tour the Heritage Garden in the History Park. The event is free to members, $5 to non-members.
‘Secret Garden’ in Ponte Vedra Beach
Apex Theatre Studio, in partnership with the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, will present three performances Friday and Saturday of the Broadway musical hit “The Secret Garden,” based on the children’s novel by Frances Hodson Burnett. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday in the concert hall, 1050 A1A North, Ponte Vedra Beach.
The production will feature students from six area high schools as well as students from Florida State University, the University of Florida and several out-of-state colleges. Jacksonville Dance Theatre in concert
The Jacksonville Dance Theatre will present its fifth annual full-length repertory concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Florida Theatre, 128 E. Forsyth St. The showcase will feature performances by the 17-member repertory company. The performance will include newly commissioned work by choreographers James Boyd and Lisa D. Long as well as new and current repertory pieces from James Morrow and Rebecca R. Levy, the Jacksonville Dance Theatre’s artistic director. Garden concert at Cummer
The Hackensaw Boys will perform an Americana garden concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, 829 Riverside Ave. Guests can bring chairs, food, and beverages of choice to enjoy the evening.
