Dominance — but no victory.
The Jacksonville Armada controlled the action against the United Soccer League’s Orlando City B, but a late goal by Austin Martz held the Armada to a 2-2 exhibition draw at Patton Park on Saturday.
The goal came moments after an apparent game-winner from Zach Steinberger after Charles Eloundou’s pass.
“We got overconfident in the second half, to be honest,” Armada coach Mark Lowry said. “We got too comfortable.”
Derek Gebhard scored the opening goal in the 32nd minute, putting away a crisp shot after Mechack Jerome’s 50-yard pass.
The Armada pressed Orlando back and created several chances for Gebhard and Jack Blake to extend the lead.
“It probably should have been 2-0 or 3-0 At halftime,” Lowry said. “Then you’re not worried about it.”
Orlando tied the score in the 56th minute after a defensive giveaway.
The Armada plays one more exhibition, at the Charlotte Independence next Saturday, before kicking off the North American Soccer League season April 2.
